Improving population health worldwide — and locally — while training globally minded physicians

As people, ideas and diseases from around the world continue to become more interconnected, understanding and addressing global health is increasingly important. At IU School of Medicine, global health is about changing and improving health around the world, particularly in resource-limited places. The school’s international footprint in health care practice, policy and research spans more than ten countries on four continents.

In particular, IU School of Medicine is known for establishing the AMPATH partnership with Moi University School of Medicine in Kenya — a model collaboration between academic medical institutions that has been thriving since 1989. AMPATH now includes more than 12 North American academic institutions and has trained thousands of students. The consortium brings together hundreds of physicians and researchers and provides patient care to millions of Kenyan patients. Through this and other global health partnerships, IU School of Medicine is improving health care delivery, offering a platform for collaborative research, and enhancing medical education worldwide.

Leading Global Partnerships to Advance Health Worldwide

IU School of Medicine’s Global Health partnerships develop and disseminate relevant and timely information on health and health care systems for use by decision-makers and care providers at a global level. For example, the school’s leadership in the IeDEA consortium, which analyzes data from more than one million patients with HIV worldwide, has led to key partnerships with UNAIDS and WHO to impact how these influential organizations model HIV estimates and patient outcomes.

Also, through leadership within the Indiana University Center for Global Health, IU School of Medicine is developing mutually beneficial partnerships across disciplines, schools and countries to reduce health disparities, solve complex health problems, and train the next generation of global health leaders.

Global Health Training Experiences

Through strong collaborative partnerships in global health, IU School of Medicine medical students, residents, fellows and faculty have opportunities to learn from and teach international counterparts to advance the discovery and treatment of chronic and communicable diseases in resource-constrained areas of the world. Participating in global health experiences help better prepare trainees and practicing physicians to care for patients at home and abroad. Programs are offered around the world with a wide range of populations and subspecialties.
