If you are a faculty member in the second or third year of your appointment, you are invited to apply for a year-long, cohort-based professional development program designed just for you.
If accepted into the Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (LAMP), you will attend monthly, three-hour seminars (held 1 to 4 p.m. on the Indiana University Indianapolis campus) focused on career planning, self-management and leadership skills. Curriculum topics include developing your strengths, managing professionals, presenting yourself on paper for the promotion and tenure process, turning everyday work into scholarship, inclusive teaching strategies, developing emotional intelligence, negotiating, managing conflict and more.
In addition to the in-person workshop sessions, each participant will receive a one-on-one consulting session with a senior faculty member.
“Becoming a LAMP fellow allows faculty to learn new knowledge, skills and attitudes to help them navigate their careers in a more productive and healthy way,” said Laura Torbeck, PhD, assistant dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development and one of the facilitators of LAMP. “LAMP also encourages faculty to form new professional networks at a critical point in their careers and to recognize that they are not alone with their challenges as junior faculty members.”
It’s an experience that can’t be replicated by reading presenters’ slides or watching videos, said Gabriel Bosslet, MD, assistant dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development and the other LAMP facilitator. “The act of coming together once monthly with a cohort of peers to do this career mindfulness work has benefits far beyond the content itself," he said.
