IU endocrinologists receive esteemed JDRF awards for contributions to type 1 diabetes research

Two IU School of Medicine faculty members have been recognized for their significant contributions to type 1 diabetes research by the leading global research and advocacy organization for the disease, JDRF. Linda DiMeglio, MPH, MD, was announced as the co-recipient of the 2023 George Eisenbarth Award for Type 1 Diabetes Prevention, and Viral Shah, MD, received the 2023 Mary Tyler Moore and S. Robert Levine, MD, Excellence in Clinical Research Award.

Rethinking care pathways: Improved outcomes for acute heart failure patients

A new study by Indiana University School of Medicine researchers found that lower-risk acute heart failure patients have more days alive and out of hospital within 30 days when they are placed in an observation unit, or a short-stay unit, instead of being hospitalized.

Nation's largest early-onset Alzheimer's study drives diversity

LEADS, led by Liana Apostolova, MD, has received $78 million in National Institute of Aging (NIA) funding since it launched in 2018. It's also the largest National Institutes of Health grant at IU School of Medicine in 2023 at $13.9 million.

Reprogramming cell in adult central nervous system promotes regeneration of motor function axons after spinal cord injury

Led by Wei Wu, PhD, assistant professor of neurological surgery and a primary member of Stark Neurosciences Research Institute, the researchers discovered a connection between the reprogramming of NG2 glial cells and robust axonal regeneration after spinal cord injury.
